Funds will accelerate recovery efforts in El Yunque National Forest and reopen key routes after Tropical Storm Ernesto’s destruction, aiding resilience against future weather event
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has allocated $2 million in “quick release” Emergency Relief funds to the U.S. Forest Service in Puerto Rico. These funds will help repair critical roadways in El Yunque National Forest that were severely damaged by Tropical Storm Ernesto, which caused landslides, flooding, and the destruction of infrastructure. The funds will allow for the swift reopening of federally owned roads, ensuring access for emergency vehicles, utility crews, and the public, as well as making the infrastructure more resilient to future weather events.
“The Federal Highway Administration is working closely with the U.S. Forest Service to repair the damage caused by Tropical Storm Ernesto,” said Acting Federal Highway Administrator Kristin White. “Emergency relief funding helps communities swiftly receive federal funds to more quickly repair impacted areas and restore access.”
Tropical Storm Ernesto hit Puerto Rico in mid-August, bringing over 10 inches of rain, 60-mile-per-hour winds, and widespread damage, leaving many without power and obstructing roads. While damage is estimated at $6.5 million, the initial $2 million is part of a broader federal effort to fund ongoing repairs through the FHWA’s Emergency Relief program, which aligns with goals to strengthen infrastructure against climate-related disasters.
